From The Book Junkie Reads . . . Fierce Hearts Box Set . . .
As a whole the box set was alluring, intriguing, connecting, and suspenseful. There were sections of ahh and wonder along with what? why? how? who? Each story had its own build in intrigue, its own alluring qualities, its own brand of suspense, and a simple connecting feature that brought each of them full circle to encompass each other. As a collection I found the read to be fulfilling, I dove right in to each new one when the one before was completed. I felt as if I was reading a new chapter to the same book with many characters that brought the full scope of things to life.

Casey
sat up in bed, the dream he’d been having still alive in his head. He rubbed
his hand through his hair. Sweat beaded on his forehead. “Oh, my God.” His
heart thudded hard and fast in his chest. He glanced at the clock on his
nightstand, sucking in deep breaths of air. Four in the morning. Loneliness
heavied his heart.
The
dream had been so real, so terrifying. So unusual.
He
set his feet on the cold wood floor and sat still on the side of the bed. He
took in the room, his room in his house, and sorted through the images in his
dream as his body reactions calmed
He
was accustomed to dreaming as his lynx form. Dreams of running through fields
with the speed and exhilaration of freedom made frequent nighttime appearances.
But this, this dream made him shiver. He dropped his head in his hands and
lived through it again.
He
saw himself standing in his human form with Michelle in her backyard. Darkness enveloped
them comfortably and above a starry, moonless sky contained their moments of
shared solitude. He’d brought her warm hand to his lips, the scent of her skin
heady and alluring. She’d laughed, delighted when he pretended to take a
delicate nibble of her skin.
Casey
balled his hands. The moment of togetherness in the dream thundered through him
as he revisited what happened next.
He’d
lost control. He’d done the unthinkable. He’d shimmered, right in front of
Michelle, into his lynx form. Horrified, he’d stood there as his purest self
and her screams echoed fiercely against his heart.

The Book Junkie Reads Interviews Lynn Crandall
How
would you describe you style of writing to someone that has never read your
work? My stories are character driven. I want to be the
author who creates believable characters who underneath everything are the
average individuals dealing with what life presents to us all but they don’t
back down. I try very hard to express in just-right ways what I want to have my
characters go through internally in facing their problems, woundings, and
triumphs. I want my writing to reach deeply and not only entertain but also inspire.
That’s all. J
What
mindset or routine do you feel the need to set when preparing to write (in
general whether you are working on a project or just free writing)?
I open to whatever there is to put to paper. I’m a pantser. I do loose
outlining of plot and characterization, but the story unfolds for me and it’s
always surprising how it can twist and turn. Being open to “whatever” is my
mindset. I typically start by listening to a song that boosts me. That song
changes, but for a number of months it has been Afterlife by Ingrid Michaelson.
Do
you take your character prep to heart? Do you nurture the growth of each
character all the way through to the page? Do you people watch to help with
development? Or do you build upon your character during story creation?
I’m a former journalist, and as such, I need foundations. I can’t write a good
article if I don’t have facts and research to work with. Characterization is
built on a character’s personality, which I create to make the story interesting
and real to readers, inner conflicts, because those are things that motivate
them on different levels, what they’re missing and what they have, what they
need to grow. But the process is fluid and characters may surprise me with new
information while I’m writing the story. Life and people are very complex. I do
watch life and people moving through it. I find it fascinating. The whole idea
of a story I want to write is to portray a character with weaknesses (even if
the character is strong) readers can relate to and bring them to the edge of their
beliefs where they have to face their
truth or stagnate and lose out on discovering their best life.
Have
you found yourself bonding with any particular character? If so which one(s)?
Oh, this a tough question. I’m a real touchy feely person, meaning I’m prone to
sinking into what another person is experiencing and gaining understanding from
that. The same thing can happen with a character, a heroine, hero, or villain.
The distance between me and a character is very slim. I think I bond with all
of the characters in whatever writing project I’m working on. For instance, in
one of the Fierce Hearts series books I knew I had to kill off a character. She
sacrificed herself for others and left behind people who felt loss. I cried
through those of those scenes. At one point, I said to myself, “I’m going to kill
(this character) and the death will leave huge sorrow in another character. I
can’t do that.” Of course, I did and I knew it was fiction, but I felt it
strongly.
Do
you have a character that you have been working on that you can't wait to put
to paper? Oh, yes I do. I’m still in the development stage
of the story and doing research, etc. But the character excites me. She’s going
to be a bounty hunter who can pick up information from objects. I’m planning to
make her a highly evolved heroine born on Earth to help rebalance it within her
line of work. Even being highly evolved, maybe because of that, she carries
deep sorrow. Her life isn’t easy. If there are themes in my books, one of them
would be that life is complex and hard – but still beautiful.
Have
you ever felt that there was something inside of you that you couldn't control?
If so what? If no what spurs you to reach for the unexperienced?
Oh, yes. I have a love for sweets, coffee, and popcorn inside me and I want a
lot of all of it. That’s probably not what you mean. It sounds dull, but the
things inside me that sometimes steal the car keys and take control are old
patterns of behavior and outdated beliefs about myself and the world around me.
These things get triggered and later I’ll stand back and say to myself, “Oh,
there’s that belief in action again.” I’m fascinating by the complexity of life
and learning more about myself.
