When rules are made to be broken…
Viscount Kellaway may sound like a gentleman, but he doesn’t act like one. As far as Kell is concerned, drink, women and the wrong side of the law are much more attractive indulgences than could be found in polite society – much to the scandal of the ton.
With all of Brighton’s women to choose from, Kell has never settled for one – and his devilish good looks have meant he’s never had to. But when he spies Angelica Curtis walking on the beach by moonlight, the living vision of a familiar dream, all that changes.
Suddenly, Kell finds himself craving the touch of a single woman…and it just so happens that the woman in question won’t have him! But if Kell’s bad ways have taught him anything, it’s that nothing is truly out of bounds…
I found this to be just an okay read 2 or 3 stars depending on where you read the review. With this said, I am the last person to say this about a historical romance, but I was literally quite bored. With each page I turned I was begging for the end to come. This is the first read that I have had with Anabelle Bryant. I will admit to finding a few aspects of the read delightful and filling. While there were others that just had me wanting to gouge my eyes out of my skull land beg for reprieve.
The delightful portions of the read did evolve the interesting Benedict (the pirate) Hampton, Viscount Kellaway. He was a complex man that was more than his so-called scandalous behavior. I found his parents to be more of a scandal than himself. This could have been the point but it was what it was. Then there was Lady Angelica (the mermaid) Curtis resigned to her fate, set by her father, yet she wants just a little piece for herself to get her through the coming times.
Neither of them wanting the other to know whom they truly are. The dance was accepting and even elegant at points. There were just the aspects that had me desiring most fervently to gouge my eyes out. Angel had not backbone. She was just completely exception of her fate and things doled to her. Her few attempts were pitiful at best. Her father was way out there. Most of his sections made me wish for the end even more. There were things that occurred that were unexpected and possibly one or two that were absolutely necessary to make things end with an HEA.
I usually end my rant with a recommendation to grab something hot, a nice corner, and even a blanket in this weather. Well let me stop there. I do not recommend this read as a complete standalone. Maybe combined with its counterparts this read could be more acceptable. I will tell you this. I am going to step back and find the others in this series and give them a try. This book has high ratings with other so maybe there is just something I am missing.
