Happy Holidays, everyone! Roxanne D. Howard here. I write contemporary and paranormal erotic romance. With the release on December 13th of my second book in the COSTA MESA Series, Toe the Line, I’d like to discuss my playlist for the book and how Holiday music can lift our moods.

Each of the COSTA MESA books are holiday themed, and the main protagonist, Piper Goldhirsch, is Jewish. In book 2, after two months apart, sea Captain Jack Spencer is determined to get Piper back. They reunite and set sail for Catalina Island for the holidays, but when a murderous convict escapes Orange County jail and hijacks their boat with them aboard, the tides will rise.

From the playlist below, one song that stuck out to me is It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year, originally written by Eddie Pola and George Wyle, sung in a jazzy rendition by Harry Connick, Jr. Lately in America and in the media, there has been so much political upheaval and unrest. This song really does bring it all into perspective about what a wonderful time of year it is for people of all backgrounds, ethnicities, political persuasions, and sexual preferences to set aside animosity and focus on the spirit of giving that the Holidays bring. It’s a wonderful time of year to come together, to hope, and believe in miracles.

Please enjoy the playlist below for Toe the Line.
I wish everyone a very wonderful holiday season, and I hope all your wishes may come true from Santa. ;)

What are some of your favorite Holiday songs?

Jack made his way up to the deck and pushed the cushioned bench away from the wheel and helm. He preferred to stand while he navigated, and he enjoyed the way the wind played on his face. He walked over to the dock pilings and cast off their moorings and then went over to the wheel, started the boat, and threw it into reverse, pulling away from the dock. He felt on top of the world. Once he had the boat turned and started the thrust, the bow of the boat cut through the water like a pair of sharp scissors down silk. Right away, he’d noticed the difference from the much larger and older Pacific Explorer; this boat sailed smoothly and almost glided through the waves. Of course, they were still in the bay, so it would be different once they were out on the open ocean.
He didn’t know how in the hell he’d convinced Piper to come with him, but he wouldn’t let this chance slip through his fingers. She would get the royal treatment and nothing less. With a thankful heart, he took Butterfly Eyes out to sea. He’d had a few practice runs after he’d bought the boat, but this was the first proper trip. He was excited. As a child, he’d thought his preoccupation with the ocean made him strange, until he’d realized it was a passion.
Some people got their high when they rock climbed, jumped out of airplanes, or skied off a fresh, powdery slope. For Jack, it had been and would always be the deep-blue sea. Nothing made a man feel more insignificant than being a small speck out on the ocean. It also made him feel unique and powerful, something that drew him back each day. He had hired two new tour captains since business took off in November, w had left him more free time to get his life in order.
As he left the bay and chartered into open water, Jack passed a pod of dolphins he normally saw when on his whale-watching tours. The sun shimmered and highlighted their grey-white bodies. The glare from the sun lit a golden path along the ridges of the waves. He opened his shirt so he could feel the wind on his chest, turned on some music, and watched the dolphins swim beside the boat. They loved a free ride. People could learn a lot about how to treat each other from the ocean. Dolphins stuck together, had each other’s backs, and watched out for one another when a shark came.
“You look deep in thought.”
He turned. Piper stood with her hand on the top of the bench seat. She wore cutoff jean shorts and one of his white shirts, buttoned a little between her breasts and tied at the midriff. Her flat abs peeked out at him. Her dark curls flowed loose and free about her face. She’d never looked more beautiful.
“Oh, I’m always deep in thought.”
He cocked an eyebrow at her and returned his attention to the water.
She snorted. “What man is ever deep in thought?”
“Hey, Legs. Be nice now. Not all of us men are idiots. I mean, the majority are, but not all.”
“Well, I worked with Larry for years, so you can’t blame me for a little disillusionment.”
“I’ll do my best to set you straight.” He glanced at her. She stood in the sun, and the breeze lifted her hair. That wicked, wide mouth of hers set his imagination into overdrive. He crooked a finger at her. “C’mere. You’re taking command.”
She pursed her lips and sashayed toward him with a confident prowl. “Ooh, I like being in command. It’s sexy.”
“You’re sexy.” He brought both her hands up to the varnished wheel. “Stay right there,” he breathed in her ear. He reached past her and switched the radio to CD mode. He selected a track, and “Let It Snow” began to play. “Hang on,” he said. He flipped on a light switch on an adjacent wall, and colorful fairy lights atop the boat and all around the helm lit up.
“Oh, how cute!”
“Wait for it,” he cautioned.
He took a small, flat remote control from his pocket and hit a button. Piper looked around. Then a snowflake landed on her nose, followed by several more, until thick, white flakes fell through the open sunroof. Her face lit up in a huge grin, and she shook her head fondly.
“Sunshine and snow… Jack Spencer, you’re a romantic.”
“I’m a crusty-old sea dog. I have no idea what you’re even talking about,” he said dryly
He wiped a snowflake off Piper’s face. She laughed as the holiday jingle serenaded them. “Right.”
He kissed the top of her head and watched the ocean. Piper sighed and leaned into him.

Virtual Tour - Batten Down the Hatches (Costa Mesa Series, #1) by Roxanne D Howard

Batten Down the Hatches
Costa Mesa Series, #1
by Roxanne D Howard
Release Date: October 25th 2016
Publisher: Loose Id
Genre: Contemporary, Holiday, Halloween

From The Book Junkie Reads . . . Batten Down the Hatches (Costa Mesa Series, #1) . . .
Quick, quickie that will give you something to remember about your next Halloween Masked Party. Piper was captivated by the mysterious Captain Jack. This Halloween party will be one she never forgets.  A chance meeting up again with Jacks gives her all that she needs to know that it was not just a fluke. Jack’s dream walks back in to his life. Will he get to keep her this time?

I have only one complaint. It was too short. I wanted more of Piper and Jack. Roxanne has delivered a quick romance that will have you wanting more. I want more of the Costa Mesa Series. I want to know where things go from this point. What other adventures are in story for Costa Mesa and Ahoy, Matey, and even a few of the other characters?

BLURB
Piper Goldhirsch is the head reporter for Business Buster, an Undercover Boss-esque tabloid exposé show. While it was never her dream job, it pays the bills. When she attends a masked Halloween Ball and has a passionate affair in the billiard room with a sexy costumed pirate captain who calls himself Captain Jack, what starts out as a few kind words and exchanged kisses soon transforms into the greatest sex of her life, and she’s haunted by the powerful magic between them. Piper parts ways with the mysterious stranger, and assumes she’ll never see him again… until he becomes her job’s next target.

Captain Jack Spencer runs his own brand new whale watching company, Ahoy, Matey, on the outskirts of Costa Mesa and Balboa Island. He’s so good at it he’s garnered the attention of rival companies. Piper is called in by Jack’s nemesis to go undercover on an ocean tour to expose him, and reveal his alleged illegal tricks that have made his business so successful in a short amount of time. But when Piper realizes he’s the same sexy man she slept with at the Halloween Ball, she’s emotionally conflicted. Jack is unable to forget the woman from Halloween, and when they do meet up again, they can’t keep their hands off each other. It’s time to Batten Down the Hatches, because the waves are about to get wild!

A knock rattled her dressing-room door.
“Goldhirsch! Get in the conference room,” Larry Gunn barked.

Piper removed her crossed ankles from the top of her vanity tabletop and glanced at the door, annoyed. She’d been focused on an article inPsychology Today about the pros and cons of one-night stands. Try as she might, she couldn’t get Captain Jack out of her head. Hell, she could still smell him, a whiff of sheer masculinity and sex. Sometimes, it felt like he held her close, like he was a phantom lover.
“Why?” she called out.
“I’ve got one for you.”
She stood up and took her jacket off the back of her chair. “Last guy said that to me got his nuts kicked in. Couldn’t walk for weeks.” She opened the door. Larry worked his gum like a cow chewing cud and looked bored.
“Yeah, look at me. I’m petrified. Get in the conference room, kid. This one should be good.”
“Weeks,” she hissed as she passed him.
“Yeah, yeah.”
Whatever it was must be serious. They had Tim Chidester, Business Buster’s private investigator they brought in for the heavier pieces, already seated, and another middle-aged man she didn’t know was also in attendance. She considered the stranger. He wore khaki shorts and a dark-blue polo shirt. She put him at somewhere in his midforties, with a red, receding hairline and thick glasses.
“Piper Goldhirsch, this is Peter Newman, owner of Newman Whale Watching Tours on Balboa Island.”
She shook the man’s hand across the table. “Nice to meet you, Peter.”
“Same here.”
She took a seat across from him and Tim and crossed her legs. “All right, let’s hear it.” Tim leaned forward and rubbed his hands together with glee, as if someone had handed him the world’s best Christmas present.
“So, to cut to the chase, Peter here says another tour company is stacking the deck.”
“That’s not what I said,” Peter snarled.
Piper leaned back and crossed her arms. “All right, why don’t you tell me what you said, then,” she said neutrally. The guy obviously had a stick up his ass about something.
“Okay. Well, on Balboa Island, there’s about eight of us whale-watching companies. We all have guidelines and laws we have to abide by, you know?”
Piper nodded, not sure where he was going.
“So, our job is to take people out and see as much wildlife in the ocean as we can within the limits of where we go. On a normal day, people will see a pod or two of dolphins, a group of sea lions, and sometimes if the gods smile on us, a whale. Ahoy, Matey is a new company. They started up less than a year ago by this young marine biology flunky.”
Spittle flew out of Peter’s lips as he talked about the man. Did this come down to some sort of personal vendetta? She steered clear of exposé pieces like that, as they were usually masked cat fights.
Within eight months, the company went from obscurity on the bottom rung to land the best reviews and the most bookings on the island.”
Piper frowned. “So, how is it you think he’s corrupt? What if he’s just a good businessman?”
Peter rubbed his forehead and looked pissed. “Because out there, on the water, it’s not about business politics. It’s how capable you are as a boat captain. They claim they spot whales every single day, on every single outing, which is unheard of. Look, whales, they migrate, okay? You’re lucky to spot one or two a day, on a good day. This guy’s claimed to see blues, minks, and humpbacks, which are an endangered species and rarely come inland. He’s luring them, mark my word. My bet is he’s got buckets of krill he uses—”
Piper furrowed her eyebrows, confused. “What’s krill? I know next to nothing about marine biology.”
“Shrimplike plankton.”
Larry supplied her with the info as Tim slid an 8x10 glossy photo of what looked like cocktail shrimp across the table at her.
“This is krill. Peter thinks the Ahoy, Matey captain has his first and second mates pour buckets of these guys into the water while the boat’s in motion to attract more whales and up the stakes. The California Whale Watching Guidelines state it’s illegal to interfere, feed, or harass marine mammals. If this guy does, or he has a way to get the whales up close to spotlight his business, he could be sued for animal endangerment, and it goes against countless state and federal laws.”
“Yes, exactly,” Peter squeaked. “Exactly. Thank you.”
Piper curled her finger around her chin and contemplated what she’d heard. “Do you have any evidence of this?”
“No, but I’ve been around. Listen, I’ve been a tour guide on Balboa Island for over fifteen years now. No way is this guy that good. If you go out there and record him like you do on your shows, I bet you’ll get something.”
Larry put his hand on the table. “Peter, would you step out of the room for a few minutes? We need to discuss this with Piper. There’s an espresso machine down the hall and some pastries, if you want to help yourself.”
Peter looked between them. “Sure.”
He stood and leered at Piper. She inwardly cringed as he checked her out.
“I love your show, Miss Goldhirsch. I’ve seen every episode.”
“Thank you,” she said thinly.
When he was gone, she looked at Tim across the table. “I don’t think there’s enough of a story here, and I’m getting weird vibes off this guy. This is complete speculation on his part and what amounts to legal hearsay. Most people at least have texts, videos, an audio recording, something. This guy has no evidence other than an obvious massive chip on his shoulder.”
Tim held up a finger with a sharklike grin. “I don’t disagree, Piper, but hear me out. I did some digging, and there’s more to the Ahoy, Matey captain than meets the eye.”
He slid a closed manila folder across the table to her. She opened it, and Larry leaned over her shoulder to peer at it.
“Do you mind?” she sassed. She often had to assert the upper hand with Larry. Thank God for her take-no-prisoners Jewish backbone. “Or does my personal space mean nothing?”
Larry put his hands up and backed off.
“Thank you.” She looked down at a black-and-white photo, a side profile of a very handsome guy in an open-throated denim shirt. He leaned over a metal rail and stared out at the ocean with a soulful look about him. He appeared to be around her age in his midthirties, clean shaven with a strong jawline, straight nose, and short, thick brown hair tousled from the wind. “He’s cute.”
“That’s Captain Jack,” said Tim.
Piper’s imagination went into overdrive as memories of last night crashed over her, the way he’d pounded into her and caressed her. She stared hard at the photo. Was it him? The side profile made it hard to tell. “If you start singing ‘The Princess Pat,’ I might have to join in.” Her voice shook as she tried to decipher from the features if it could be him. The crooked, sexy smile did look familiar. Very familiar. Oh, shit.

MY INTERVIEW WITH ROXANNE D. HOWARD
How would you describe you style of writing to someone that has never read your work?
Regardless of whether you like to read deep and profound or light and funny novels, what you’ll get from my work is an engaging, fully fleshed out plot that you can’t put down.  I write fun and sexy books, as well as dark and deep, but one thing all my books have in common is a great romance with an original, fresh plot. I believe the reader should feel as though they’re living through the eyes and bodies of the characters, so the sex scenes are always hot, and I like to throw delicious twists into all of my plots, and of course, a happily ever after.

What mindset or routine do you feel the need to set when preparing to write (in general whether you are working on a project or just free writing)?
What a great question. You know, as a mother it’s hard to find the time to write. I prefer to write in a quiet environment, whether it’s my home office, or in the kitchen on my laptop when the kids have gone to school. Sometimes I enjoy lighting a candle. But one thing always has to be present; I have to have my head in the game. By this, I mean I need to have the world of the novel concretely mapped out in my brain, and I need to be able to picture the characters as solidly as if you were sitting in the seat next to me. Sometimes I’ll listen to a playlist I’ve done up of the novel I’m working on, or go for a walk and envision scenes.

Do you take your character prep to heart? Do you nurture the growth of each character all the way through to the page? Do you people watch to help with development? Or do you build upon your character during story creation?
I’ve been extremely fortunate to have met some amazing and very unique people throughout my life, and most of the time I served in the Army helped me glean tidbits of characters here and there, so when I come up with a plotline, nine times out of ten, the characters walk fully formed into my head. I have to have a firm grasp on who the characters are as people (what do they look like, sound like, wear, eat, etc.) before I begin writing, because I like it to play like a movie in my mind. I do like to cast the characters beforehand. I often think, this person would be perfect as so-and-so. I thought of Idina Menzel for the role of Piper, and Josh Duhamel as Jack for the new Costa Mesa series.

Have you found yourself bonding with any particular character? If so which one(s)?
I really, really loved Piper Goldhirsch from Batten Down the Hatches. I love all my characters; they are all people I’d want to be friends with in person. But Piper stood out of the crowd to me. I loved writing her; she has a sweet soul, and she’s a good person with a lot of panache. I also love her sass.

Do you have a character that you have been working on that you can't wait to put to paper?
I do. I’m busy getting a NA erotic romance novel I’ve written ready for submission, but I’m itching to write a three-part children’s series for my daughters about a ballet student, and I’m going to have some fun with it as soon as some other projects are out of the way.

Have you ever felt that there was something inside of you that you couldn't control? If so what? If no what spurs you to reach for the unexperienced?
This has got to be the coolest interview question I’ve come across. I love the expression unfurl, because with anyone trying to reach a goal or come into their own as authors, we have to let ourselves unfurl. The one thing I’ve never been able to control is my insatiable need to write. It’s always been there, like an invisible force. Its’ a powerful form of expressionism, and whether I was writing in my journal as a teen or creating stories that would later become books, I’ve always felt the need to put ink to parchment, so to speak. One thing I will say about reaching for the unexperienced is, until a few years ago, I’d never written a sex scene in my life. I was afraid to go there. But I broke out of my comfort zone because I felt like I needed to, and that has made all the difference. If there’s something inside you that says, ‘hey, don’t ignore me. Try this, go out and do that. You know you can,’ don’t ignore it due to self-doubt. Believe in yourself, and dare to be different.

The blindfold was tied on and made of soft black material that caressed her skin. Though she knew it was light out, the mask bathed her in darkness. Still, she was aware of his touch, his heated, pulling kisses that moved away from her lips and trailed down her jaw to her throat, over her collarbone, toward her breasts.
A tug pulled her hoodie up a little, and he slowly zipped it open, yanking the front of her T-shirt down, her bra right along with it. She couldn’t see anything, but knew it was him. Her dream lover.
She expected him to latch on to her nipple, but he didn’t. He caressed it instead, flicking his fingernail along the sensitive bud, marking a trail of pebbling, tantalizing kisses around the entire circumference of her right breast. He laved the sensitive underside with his warm tongue, making her whimper, while his hand came up to fondle her left breast.
Lark was aware they were both lying on the porch swing, but he distracted her by seizing her nipple with his teeth.
She groaned. He chuckled, the vibrations reverberating through her whole body. She clutched him tighter. Lark wanted to pull off the blindfold, but he had her pinned down. He continued his ministrations, kissing his way over her bared, flat stomach, across her hip bone, and closer to his ultimate goal. She covered his hand at her hip with hers and grasped it. She was a sweaty mess from her run, but it seemed like he was taking in everything about her.
“Wait,” she said. “I-I can’t see you. I want to. Take this off.”
“I’m here,” he assured her, crawling back up over her body.
Knuckles brushed softly down her cheek, and she could feel his gaze on her. “You’re so beautiful,” he murmured.
Lark gave up fighting her blindness and self-lamentations as his lips pressed against her own. “Mmm, yes,” she moaned between kisses. “Kiss me, God, yes. I don’t want to feel anything anymore but you.” There was something about the darkness that emboldened her. She felt his chest and encountered the lapels of a jacket of some sort. She yanked him all the way down, moaning and sucking his lower lip between her teeth.
In an instant, the full weight of his body came down upon her, and his kisses changed from having been demanding and passionate to the complete polar opposite.
It was as if he was timid and reluctant, yet the more she gave to him--putting her arm around his neck and releasing the fury of her frustrations out on him--the more he began to respond. Tentative at first, with a hint of reluctance he’d never shown before. What was this? A cool breeze blew past her face, and a sense of déjà vu of the night before overtook her.
* * * *
If the kiss had stayed careful and guarded, she might have continued to question it. But the blindfold disappeared, and she realized she’d fallen asleep. Her eyes flew open, and he was there. Oh my God. He was there! Heated eyes watched her. Rakish dark hair fell over his forehead as he breathed hard, and the morning sun lit up the world behind him. She took a deep, shuddering breath to speak, but his hands moved to cup her face. He held still and closed his eyes as his lips took her mouth. Right then and there, it was very clear that this was real. That was the weight of a real man on top of her, clothed, and smelling citrusy and clean. What in the hell is happening here?
How did he get here? He was only her dream lover.
Or was he?
Confused beyond all comprehension, Lark didn’t have any time to contemplate what was really going on. His lips delivered a breath-stealing, soul-shattering kiss, and then they were all over each other. This, ah, this she knew. Lark hooked her ankle over his and put a hand on his shoulder, trying to rid him of his jacket and draw him closer. She clenched her hand in his hair as he devoured her mouth. He tasted the same as her dream lover, and she put her tongue in his mouth to savor more of that tangy sweetness.
They were both making noises they never had in her dreams, little breathy gasps and blasts of air as their mouths met and separated as they sought new angles and depths to their passion.
He made a disgruntled sound as he tried to get more comfortable in the cradle of her hips over the hindrance of clothes, and she realized she really wasn’t dreaming anymore. He nibbled on her lower lip as she opened her mouth to tell him to stop, but then she was carried away in the undercurrent of his large, warm hands, which were caressing the skin of her stomach beneath her hoodie and T-shirt. She continued to accept his kisses but pawed down her still zipped-up sweat jacket. Okay, so she was still clothed. He was rock hard against her, and he ground his hips into her, a disbelieving grunt escaping his lips. Lark rolled her eyes back, shivering at the jolt that went through her.
“Wh-- Mmm. Whoa. Stop!” She finally managed to say against his mouth. She furrowed her eyebrows and scrutinized him as he breathed in and out, bracing himself on the weight of his hands above her, his bright green eyes bearing into hers. His face was the face of her dreams--the sensual, bowed lips and cleft chin, the built body, and the thick hair. His hair... She blinked. It was cut at the nape and styled for a day at work. She glanced down at what he was wearing.
“Um, why are you wearing a suit and tie this time?” she asked, squinting against the sunlight. Please, God, let this be a dream. He moved his head, putting her in shade.
“This time?” He lifted an eyebrow, perplexed. “You’ll have to forgive me, lass, but I’ve no idea what the devil you’re talking about.” He maneuvered himself off her and sat upright at the end of the swing.
She tucked her feet against her and sat up, unable to do anything more than blink at him in utter disbelief.
“I was coming up to knock on the door when I saw you lying here, and given how you were tossing and the noises you were making, it looked like maybe you were having some sort of a seizure.”
He seemed contrite, and he turned his head as he licked his lips, full and abused from her kisses. Something close to mortification bloomed inside her.
“Erm, you...begged me to kiss you, and then you yanked me down. One thing led to another and, well, that was pretty much the way of it. I am only human, though I know that’s no excuse.” He swallowed and stared at her, his Adam’s apple moving in his throat. “I apologize. I shouldn’t have gone down when you pulled me, but it was strange--like you knew me or something.”
Lark leaned forward and rubbed her eyes. This couldn’t be real. She was hallucinating. She had to be. When she opened her eyes she’d see a man in his fifties with a receding hairline, glasses, and a beer gut. She reopened her eyes, and there he was: The full package. In the flesh. There was an air of intelligence in the way his eyes scrutinized her. She sat up and planted her feet on the porch, then put a hand to her head. The vertigo from earlier returned. “No, I’m sorry. I was dreaming...”
“Excuse me for saying so, but it must’ve been one hell of a dream.”
Lark nodded and tried not to black out as a wave of dizziness came over her.
“You look like you’re dehydrated. Hold on.”
The lilt of his familiar Irish accent soothed her like warm milk. He stood and walked over to a black laptop case propped near the front door that had several thick manila folders sticking out of its open center, one of which she could see said BRAITHWAITE in large, capital letters on an index label. He crouched down and unzipped the front pocket, extracting an unopened plastic water bottle.
“Here,” he said, unscrewing it and holding it out to her.
“Thanks.” She accepted the bottle and took a long sip of the cool water. It almost instantly revived her. She wiped a little water off the corner of her mouth with the top of her knuckle as he watched her. She offered it back to him, but he shook his head and reclaimed his seat next to her.
“Keep it. Drink.”
“Thank you.” She closed her eyes and took several large gulps, the cool liquid a balm to her throat.
“My name’s Niall O’Hagan.”
His voice was deep and pleasant. It sounded different, lighter than the sultry bedroom voice she was used to from her dreams.
“I’m the Braithwaites’ attorney.”
Lark paused in midsip and lowered the bottle in her hands. “You--no.” She laughed, glancing at him.
His mouth lifted at the corners, as if it were dawning on him he was the butt of a joke he wasn’t aware of. “I...what?”
Oh, the irony of dreaming about her father’s lawyer this whole time. Oh my God. She started giggling. This was it; she was officially losing it. She got up and walked over to the top step of the porch, put a hand over her face, and plunked herself down. “I am so messed up.”
A sudden, unwanted flash of Gemma saying “darlin’” to Charles yesterday surfaced, and tears stung her eyes. She went silent and willed them not to fall. It was no use.
After a moment, Niall sat down on the step beside her. “I’d offer you a drink, but I quit ten years ago.”
Lark laughed, despite the tears. “An Irish attorney who doesn’t like Guinness is like an Englishman who doesn’t like fish and chips or something.”
“I know; shameful,” he said with mock contrition. “Don’t hold it against me. I’m doing the world a favor. Trust me. I was a horrible drunk. Seriously, though, are you okay, miss?”
Lark scoffed and gesticulated with her hands to the sky. “It’s Lark. And what a loaded question of the day.” She couldn’t look at him, not after what happened. She clenched the edge of the step on either side of her and stared out at the trees.
“Well, considering we’ve already gone to second base, we might as well be open with each other. Forgive me if I’m candid, but it seems you were having an alleged, eh, intense dream, and you woke up and believed I was him. Is that right?”
Horror dawned on her at what she’d done, and her jaw dropped. “No!” Yes. She glanced at him, and his knowing expression said he knew that was exactly what happened.
“I see,” he said, his tone careful but persistent. “Then why did you kiss me like that?”
“I-I don’t have to answer that.” She lifted her chin with defiance.
He scooted closer to her. “No, you don’t. But I wish you would.”
She scratched her head in frustration and jumped up, moving toward the door.
“I’m sorry to embarrass you,” he said, and she paused with her hand halfway to the doorbell. “I’m decent. I would never-- I never meant to take advantage of you at all, please know that. When you kissed me like that, so familiar, I...”
It occurred to her Niall was being a lot more of a gentleman about the whole thing than most men would be, given how horrid the situation was. And she, meanwhile, was being a total bitch. And the poor guy had no clue as to why.
He met her in two quick strides, and his proximity alarmed her. They’d never both been standing in any of her dreams. He was at least a few inches over six feet, well built with wide shoulders and a lithe, muscular frame to complement the height.
He assessed her as well, and his eyes widened with realization. “Wait. Lark? Rick’s daughter? But you’re so little,” he said, surprised. “From the pictures, I assumed you’d be, erm-
“Fatter?” she asked, glad she was at least back on sure ground. She could always toss jokes around about her heavy days. “It’s okay. You can go ahead and say it. I’ve lost a lot of weight.”
Niall put a hand to the back of his neck. His eyebrows rose. “I think ‘a lot’ is an understatement. Good on you! My mam struggled with her weight too; I know from growing up with her how hard it is to lose it. Well, you look amazing. Wow.”
He rolled his eyes at himself and glanced away. The bizarreness of seeing him act misplaced and common, and not at all like a sex panther, was messing with her.
“I’m sorry.” He laughed. “I sound like an idiot. Listen, I hope you don’t think I’m some leering wanker. This is...awkward.”
“You can say that again,” she murmured with a small smile, wondering what he would say if she told him she’d been having erotic dreams of him every night for the last six months. It was bad enough she’d just made out with the guy.
She held out her hand but didn’t make eye contact. “So listen, how about we forget it ever happened, okay? I’m Lark Braithwaite. I flew in a couple of days ago from London.”
He took her hand and closed his long fingers over hers. “Niall O’Hagan. Pleasure.” He stepped a little closer. “And I’m all for a clean slate, but forgetting’s not on my agenda, lass. I’m taking that one to the grave. Hands down the best snog I’ve ever had in my life. Client’s daughter or no, you can’t take it back.”

The Ultimate Leading Man
Hello, I’m Roxanne D. Howard, and I write erotic contemporary and paranormal romance novels. Today I’d like to discuss what I think makes up the ultimate leading man (or how he’s currently known to the literary world, a book boyfriend).

1.     Baby, you can drive my car. He needs to be driven and to have something he’s passionate about (besides the heroine/love interest). Fabrizio the hard-core shifter Alpha is all well and good, but who is he beneath the bulging muscles and chiseled eight pack? Men have needs and set goals just as women do, and more importantly, they have emotions. Does he wear his heart on his sleeve or bottle it up inside and take it out in the boxing ring? Either way, something drives him, and I like to both write and read about a guy who’s going places, and knows what he wants.

2.     If you’ve got it, flaunt it. Or, wait… don’t. He should be capable and confident, but not cocky. A line I’ve always loved from the Harry Potter series is, “If you want to know the measure of a man, Harry, watch how he treats his inferiors.” A good leading man doesn’t need to constantly prove he’s got what it takes; he simply does, and can stand back with a humble air, even if his biceps rival Arnold Schwarzenneger’s. Nothing is worse to me than a man who loves himself too much. I like heroes who know their worth, but remain humble about it.

3.     He knows what she wants. He should anticipate the heroine’s needs, and be the yin to her yang. If the heroine is pouring her heart out to her rock star Alpha boyfriend, but he’s doing a Wayne’s World guitar riff in his head, super not cool. A good leading man should listen to his leading lady and care about how she feels. Her needs should be a priority. How she feels should affect him, and he should be invested in her happiness.

4.     Alpha tendencies with a Beta’s understanding. What I enjoy about a fully fleshed out leading man is the way he lets the heroine be her own woman and respects who she is, but takes more control of the wheel after they close the bedroom door.

5.     Great lover. Let’s face it, in the mashed potatoes and gravy of literary romance, the love scenes are the gravy. We all want to read a great plot that includes a nicely crafted love scene with a leading man who knows how to please his mate.

In my first novel, At the Heart of the Stone, Niall O’Hagan steps out of Lark Braithwaite’s nightly dreams and enters her life, turning it upside down. Niall hails from Ireland, and he’s the Braithwaite’s family attorney. When Lark dreams of him, he’s her mysterious dream lover, giving her everything she needs and wants, which she doesn’t get in her waking relationship with her cold, philandering fiancé. When Lark meets Niall in person, his direct curiosity catches her by surprise, and breaks apart every preconceived notion she had about what love truly is.

What do you think makes up a good leading man?
