Tagline: Rescue Mission: In Progress…please stand by

From The Book Junkie Reads . . . N.I.C. (ALMOST, #3) . . .
All these things lead to a set of bread crumbs drawing me closer to the finish line:
Escape Marine Research: Complete. Survival mode activated…
Capture of S.H.A.Y. initiated. Hybrid hunter released…
Shay’s death is certain. There is nowhere else to run…
And maybe this time…Shay is the one to be rescued.

As I began to look at things like this was the first book of the series and pieces began to fall in to place.  I just wanted more and found myself biting my nails.  The world was vast and scope of Miami was just so different in this world. Connection, friendships, loyalties were on a different standard.  I'm wanting more and daring to hope for it. This was a super quick read in a science fiction world were S.H.A.Y, E.R.I.C, A.M.I.E., and N.I.C. have different meanings than just a name.

If I give no other advise. Heed this one.  Read the previous books first. I felt a drift a bit lost and a little confused. This was the first in series that I read. Once I could see past the confusion and the sense of loss. I was able to enjoy the ride. Learning all the different details of this fantastic fantasy/fiction world was intriguing.

Escape Marine Research: Complete. Survival mode activated…

Shay and her Optional Human Parent Darla escape Dr. Cole and make it across the Miami border from the Marine Research Facility, but their safety comes at a hefty price. Shay thought hitting Eric in the head would save him from being reset, but there was too much blood. She has no idea if he survived or what will happen to N.I.C. without her there.

Capture of S.H.A.Y. initiated. Hybrid hunter released…

If a highly skilled hybrid hunter tracking her through the streets of Miami isn’t enough to worry about, Shay’s corporate sponsor Endre wants something from her too. Threats are in motion to terminate N.I.C. and pull the plug on Shay’s A.M.I.E., essentially killing them both. Shay has no choice but to make a deal with Endre to create inventions for him to sell to potential financial sponsors. But when he ups the stakes and wants Shay to help create a weapon of war, she refuses. She’ll just have to find another way to save N.I.C. and find Eric.

Shay’s death is certain. There is nowhere else to run…

Shay has an impossible choice—be captured by the hybrid hunter on the streets or unlinked from A.M.I.E. for refusing to help Endre. Either way, everything she’s fought so hard to save will be lost. Love has always been stronger than science, though.

And maybe this time…Shay is the one to be rescued.

Dr. Cole

“The hybrid is released…”

I raced over to the containment cell, lifting the doors. Clouds of what looked like steam blew in my face and I coughed. Subject 31 did not move.
Was she dead?
How long had she been in there? My only friend was locked up because of me. It was time she was set free. Would she remember what I did? Did she think I was the enemy? Was I?
Amie faded. “Don’t let anything happen to my little girl.”
Sharp pains shot through me. What was I to my mother?
I shook the thought away and peeked inside the containment.
A girl with short blonde hair and dark eyes who resembled my Amie sat with her knees tucked into her chest.
“Shay 31?” I said.
She glanced up. “Have you found a cure for me?”
I shook my head. “Not yet.” I couldn’t swallow. Does she not remember me? “We’re still working as hard as we can to fix you.”
“Why are you taking me out of containment?”
My lips trembled. “I need your tracking skills to find my little sister. Would you be willing to find her?”
“Where is she?”
“She’s escaped into Miami.”
“That’s a huge place. Have you ever been?”
I shook my head.
“How long do I have to find her before I die?”
I froze.
“How long, S.H.A.Y. subject 59?”
She did remember me.
“It’s Dr. Cole.”
“How long, 59?”
“Dr. Cole.”
“I’m not coming back from this trip, am I?”
“I just need my sister found,” I said. “Then you’ll be put safely back into containment until we discover a cure for you.”
“I thought you were my friend,” she said. “I was nothing but an experiment to you.”
I stiffened. “That was a long time ago.”
“Now you want me to help you find someone you claim is your sister? What do you plan to do to her?”
“Nothing, her sponsors want her alive and immediately back in this facility.”
“If I do this, I don’t want to go back inside here to rot.”
“Our Amie says you must go back inside immediately.”
Subject 31 shook her head. “I said no.”
“Please just find my sister before something detrimental happens to her.”
Subject 31 stepped out of her containment, stretching her limbs. She was tall and lanky with a sharpness in her eyes. “My body feels so achy.”
“Thank you for helping me.”
She shrugged. “I just want out of that box. Please tell our Amie that I’m ready for phase four.”
“Phase four?” I stepped aside. “What are you talking about?”
“It’s none of your concern. Tell our mother what I’ve said.” She sniffed the air, using her hybrid senses…

Reprogram of E.R.I.C. initiated. Download complete in 3…2…1…
BLURB

The sweet, charming Eric that Shay knew is officially gone. He’s been reprogrammed by Dr. Cole and the other scientists aboard the marine research facility that developed Shay. Now, instead of assisting Shay in her grand scheme to save her Optional Human Parent, Darla, from certain death, Eric has been reprogrammed to kill them both. That intimate moment on the beach they shared…lost forever.

Mission complete: Suspect (S.H.A.Y.) captured…

With Eric’s help, Dr. Cole finds Shay and takes her back to the research facility where she will remain until she can be linked to her robotic host and terminated. Shay is placed into the care of a new program called N.I.C. that will analyze her data and keep her safe. Except, if the N.I.C. discovers Shay has already linked, he will initiate her termination immediately, ending any chance Shay has of saving Darla.

It’s only a matter of time…

Either Eric will locate her and finish the mission he’s been programed to fulfill, or the N.I.C. will discover Shay’s secret and finish Eric’s job for him. Eric tracks her back to the facility, and Shay fears it may finally be the end for her and Darla. She can’t bring herself to kill Eric, even if it’s to save her own life. One thing is stronger than even science…

Love.

E.R.I.C.
Someone was in the boat with Shay.
I adjusted my vocals to sonar for better hearing under the water and resisted using satellite vision. It was rare I ever received the capabilities and hated when new software downloaded to replace the existing. The lone keys never seemed to receive a satellite signal. It was a dead zone and if the upgrades were satellite based, I’d be without many defenses.
I swam faster. My main concern was the intruder I spotted in the boat with Shay. Was it a scientist?
There was a small island. I climbed out onto it’s shoreline and narrowed my eyes, scanning the boat.  My vision stopped on the unidentified person. I finally downloaded updated software. While satellite images uploaded, I tried to focus the rest of my attention on the unknown intruder. Somehow, my communications programming didn’t register.  I switched to satellite. It was slower than my usual communications, but it knew who the intruder was.

Species: Human; Homo sapiens’ original flesh; soul.
Specified Use: Optional Human Parent
Genetics Match: DNA match: yours.

Mine?
What did Shay just call her?
She called her Mom and then, Darla.
Darla.
I couldn’t swallow.
Was she my human host?
“Mom?”
I remembered her! She used to cradle me in her arms and sing to me. She had the same thick, dark hair that tickled my face and those big, soft eyes…
I reached out—my eyes locking with hers.
My body jolted, electrical currents ran through my veins and I shook, vibrations overtaking me.
You’re being reprogrammed. Please stand by.
“I’m being what?” I could barely get the words out.
Everything blurred. My fingers, still webbed, curled in on themselves and my nails cut into my flesh. I couldn’t stop my teeth from chattering.
Reprogramming nearly complete.
Who was talking to me?
My eyes went into manual override. I tried to look to the left, but it was as if someone controlled my will to do so. My optics scanned without permission and when I tried to shut down satellite use, red lights flashed within my pupils, blinding me. Next, I could feel my limbs reject my thoughts. They belonged to someone else. Who could do this to me?
“What’s happening?” I jolted. Tears streamed down my face. Messages I didn’t want to read appeared before my limited visuals.
Kill the human host.
“I can’t do that!”
Kill the human host.
“But the human host is my mother!”
Sharp jabs of pain shot up my spine.
The voice echoed inside my skull. “I said kill the human host.”
“I won’t do it!”
Electrical currents paralyzed me. I couldn’t speak and my eyesight blackened. Something or someone forced my arms outward into the diver’s position.
“You will kill the human host,” the voice said. “You’ve been reprogrammed.”
My body struggled against me. I dragged my feet along the sand, feeling waves crash into my toes.
“Kill the human host.”
“No.”
“Then I will do it for you,” the voice said.
My body jerked forward, arching and splashing into the sea.

The Creation of N.I.C. and N.I.C.K.

Nick is special.

When we were younger, our mothers sent us to the same babysitter, Mrs. K. She was awesome, giving us free reign of her house to play. I was older and would write stories. The characters, sometimes, had the names of the kids, younger than me. (Nick was the talking duck in my story Christine.) Now, he’s a father to a wonderful son, named Nicholas.

Years later, at the pool, Eric and Nick were talking about S.H.A.Y. Nick said, “I want to be in the next one.” I asked him some questions and realized, what he loved most, was his son. It reminded me of our days at Mrs. K’s house (and I decided I ought to revise Christine, keeping the duck, of course).

So, the N.I.C. and his “Keeper” are a dual character that you will meet in book two, E.R.I.C. and learn even more about in book three, N.I.C.
