from
“Phoenix and Styx”:
They consumed the
food, all of it. They drank the wine he’d brought, all of it. By the time they
were finished, the flowers were white-gray ash in their vase, and some small
flakes settled on their heaped dessert spoons. Neither of them minded when they
swallowed the truth of her fire.
Through it all, they
did not talk.
After the meal, she
broke the temple-silence first. “What am I?”
“Old. You are always
old, even if you only show it through a lens of youth. What things you must
have wanted to make you live to such age! You are the thing that always wants
to live another day tomorrow, even if it means death today.”
She licked a flake of
ash from one corner of her lips, dark chocolate from the other. “The world here
is so cold.”
He shrugged. “It
feels cold to you. That’s the feeling of just being alive, of not really
living. I can stand it longer, the monotony of just flowing along, but
something like you? You have to live so hard the passion of it makes you cry.”
Those were the words
she needed, all that came after was kindling. She got up and with one arm
sweeping like a wing, brushed everything off the table, breaking things and
throwing noise like bird calls. She pulled him to his feet with a searing hand
wrapped around the collar of his shirt and her lips on his mouth—she would have
branded him if not for his cooler water nature.
He flowed around
her—his arms and lips encircled her, and he pushed her down on the table as if
it was a place for sacrifice.
“And now you are
fire,” he said and pushed her skirt up her thighs only to see it burn off her
skin, just like the blouse she was wearing, revealing more skin that tasted
like the sun. Nimbly, like the water that he was, he shed his clothes before
her heat could burn them away.
Alexa Piper enjoys writing, romance, and the
paranormal. This said, becoming a paranormal romance writer seemed perfectly
reasonable, but for Alexa, it is more than that; it's fun. Alexa’s work has
appeared in the anthologies Demons, Imps, and Incubi and The Naughty List.
Luminous Dreams is Alexa's first collection, and she hopes her readers will
have as much fun reading it as she had writing it. Check out Alexa’s online
