From The Book Junkie Reads . . . Change of Heart (Healing Harts, #5) . . .
Where can I start. . . I would like to get to know more of the characters from this series. I was intrigued a great deal upon meeting them in passing.  I found the main characters Leah and Gage to be down to Earth, realness. I love Gage's persistence. I loved Leah determination. I understood her. I could connect to her easily.

I truly want to read the other books in this series, but in no way do you need to have followed the series from the start. You will want to know of the others.  I found this read to be very enjoyable and on my list to read again as I begin the series from the start.

**This ARC was provided via Tasty Book Tours in exchange for an honest review.**

The fifth and (for now) final book in TJ Kline’s Healing Harts series.
Leah McCarran has never had anything but bad luck in her life, with the exception of her dream job, working as a therapist for at-risk youth at Heart Fire Ranch. But when her car breaks down on the side of the road and she finds herself stranded, the playboy who shows up to help, seems like the last person she can count on.

Gage Granger has risen above the circumstances of his youth, enough that people believe he has the Midas touch, especially in business. But when one costly mistake could send his reputation and his company into ruin, he needs some time to get his head on straight before he makes a decision that could affect hundreds of lives and heads to see his brother, near Heart Fire. The last thing he expected to find was a feisty therapist who needs his help, even if she won’t admit it.

Leah doesn’t want friends. There was only one person she let close - her high school counselor and the mentor who not only took her in but changed her life, and then she died. Leah doesn’t want that kind of hurt again so it’s easier to remain distant. But Gage is making it difficult. And finding out that he staying next door at Heart Fire Ranch isn’t making it any easier to avoid the kind man who is worming his way into her heart.

Gage sees the pain Leah’s trying so adamantly to hide but neither can help the attraction that begins to develop as they rescue two abandoned kittens and find they have far more in common than they believed. Gage helps her to move past her nightmarish past and she helps him realize that one mistake doesn’t define his worth.

“We should start over.” Gage held out a hand. “I’m Gage Granger, your neighbor. It’s nice to meet you.”
Leah bit the corner of her lip as the horse nudged her hand. “Don’t do that,” she said quietly. She rubbed her hand over the animal’s face the way Jessie had told her they liked. “We’re both old enough that we don’t need to pretend we get do-overs in life.”
“Ah, another cynic.” He reached out and patted the horse’s neck. The second horse seemed to take notice and ambled slowly in their direction.
“A realist,” she corrected. “Another?”
“Like my brother, or at least, he used to be one.” Gage shrugged but looked back at her, curiosity clear in his dark eyes. “So, you don’t think you can forgive and forget? There’s no starting over?”
“Not really. You can forgive, but it’s a conscious choice. Forgetting something ever happened? That’s impossible. It’s like saying there’s such a thing as love at first sight.”
“Next you’re going to tell me you don’t believe in happily ever after either.” He clucked his tongue and shook his head with a grin tugging at the corners of his full lips. “What kind of therapist are you?”
She didn’t return his smile. “A good one. One who knows what I’m talking about and uses hard facts to get through to people who’ve see far too much reality in their daily lives to believe in fairy tales.”
She leaned one elbow on the railing and faced him. “The people I work with don’t need illusions. They need coping skills because life isn’t some kind of fantasy. Most people you meet aren’t good, and they don’t want to help you.”

Gage narrowed his eyes, trying to see more than what she would allow anyone to see. Leah wondered for a moment if she should have just kept her mouth shut. There was something about this man that made her usual calm, reserved demeanor take a vacation and made her tongue run away without her brain. If she wasn’t careful, she’d end up telling him her life story, and no one deserved to bear the weight of that nightmare.

Take a journey and meet the people of the Healing Harts series

A Healing Harts Who’s Who
The Harts
Jessie Hart – (Heart’s Desire) Jessie is the middle sister of the clan and, like most middle children, feels invisible at times. She’s a horse “whisperer,” a trainer who has an uncanny knack for bringing abused horses back to health, emotionally and physically, but she’s struggling to keep her family’s ranch afloat after her parent’s death. She is extremely determined and willing to do whatever it takes, she just isn’t ready to give up on her dream quite yet, even if it means facing her fear of failure.

Julia Hart – (Taking Heart) Julia is the youngest sister of the three Harts. A sought after dog trainer, she now specializes in rescuing dogs from shelters and retraining them as therapy dogs. After a trauma in her past, with a client, she’s wary of trusting her instincts again, but her soft heart is touched when she meets a human or animal in need. She’s the voice of reason for her family and usually the calming influence over her siblings.

Justin Hart – (Close to Heart) A cowboy at heart, Justin is the oldest of the Hart clan and takes his responsibility seriously…too seriously most of the time. As a veterinarian, he helps both of his sisters with their rescues. He’s overbearing, pushing and demanding but only because he wants the best for his sisters and cousin, and he’s sure he knows best. He’s a man’s man in every sense of the word but his family knows he’s really a teddy-bear at heart with enough loyalty and love in him for ten men.

Bailey Hart – (Wild at Heart) Bailey is the “wild child” of the family. While technically their cousin, she’s the youngest of the Hart clan and adopted sister to the other three. Like Justin, she is fiercely loyal to their family but she shows it by being the first to help each solve their problems, in her own special, sometimes conniving way. Bailey is too independent to let anyone boss her around, especially her cousins, but she refuses to let any of them down, even at the expense of her own dreams for the future. While Julia is the voice of reason, Bailey is the one who will tell it like it is.

Others
Nathan Kerrington – (Heart’s Desire) Justin’s roommate at college, Nathan is the son of a crooked politician who used his power to control his son. Now, wealthy in his own right, Nathan is ready to come to Justin’s aid when he needs him to help save their parents’ ranch from Jessie’s plans. But Justin has no idea that Nathan and Jessie had a history together, one he’d never forgotten and he’d never made up for to her. In order to help her save the ranch, Nathan first must earn her forgiveness.

Dylan Granger – (Taking Heart) Dylan is the oldest of two and the “man of the house” after his abusive father left his mother. After joining the military to help care for his mother’s medical bills and his brother’s college tuition, he thrived in his job as a medic. Until he was the sole survivor of an attack. Medically discharged with PTSD, he’s unable to cope and ready to give up. His one last hope is the woman his brother, Gage, insists he meet – Julia Hart.

Gage Granger – (Taking Heart, Change of Heart) Gage is used to everything working out for him. He’s been especially successful in business and will do anything to help his brother, Dylan. The one thing he won’t do is disappoint him so when he makes a costly mistake, he tries to hide it until he can remedy the situation. The last thing he expects is want to rescue someone else, but that’s exactly what he wants to do for Leah McCarran when he finds her stranded on the side of the road.

Leah McCarran – (Change of Heart) Leah’s be on her own for a long time and she prefers it that way. Cynical and scarred, she’s looking for a new start with her new position as the therapist for Heart Fire Ranch. She doesn’t want the help of a flirtatious playboy but finds herself with little choice when he rescues her from the side of the road and she finds out they are neighbors. Unfortunately, he triggers memories of the past she’s not sure she’ll ever be ready to face.

Alyssa Cole – (Close to Heart) A once famous actress, Alyssa’s fairytale life comes crashing down around her where her emotionally abusive husband, and manager, kicks her out. Pregnant and alone, she seeks refuge with her family, but a car accident and a litter of puppies change the direction of her future. When she meets Justin Hart, she realizes that not all men hurt and some aren’t nearly as tough as they appear.

Chase McKee – (Close to Heart, Wild at Heart) Justin’s best friend has returned to town a changed man after his partner on the police department was killed during a routine call. Still trying to cope with the feelings of loss and guilt, he knows he’s not ready to move on just yet. But the torch he’d always carried for Bailey hasn’t fizzled out and when she announces she’s leaving town to pursue her dreams, he knows this may be his last chance.

Blake Whitmore – (Wild at Heart, Change of Heart) As the new doctor in town, Blake has suddenly become the most “eligible bachelor” and doesn’t want the attention. So far, he’s been able to keep most women at bay, thanks to his friendship with Bailey and her posing as his girlfriend when needed. No one realizes the real reason for his aversion to dating. No one knows the loss he’s suffered and how he will never be able to love like that again.
