A mystery where the only clues are buried deep in the troubled heart of Georgia.
With the odd disappearance of her parents, Gussie Gibson has lived her entire life with her granny on a peaceful pecan orchard, owned by the meanest man in all of Georgia—Mr. J.P. Combs. Granny teaches Gussie many valuable life lessons as a black woman growing up in the still-segregated south. Mr. Combs is an evil underhanded banker who takes liberties beyond his privilege. When Granny dies, Combs informs Gussie she owes him back rent—but he wants much more than money for payment—and more than Gussie can live with.
The Book Junkie Reads . . . found this to be a beautifully written first person narrative of a young mixed race teenager fighting to make her own way in the post slavery world. Through it all she has to fight the grief of losing the only person in the world that she could count on. The unwanted, unwelcomed attentions of a mean, nasty old man that should know better but don't care. Finding her way in a world that she does not know much about. Discovery first love. Making difficult life choices. Finding family and learning to battle on.
Gussie Gibson has a lot to learn about the world around her and in the first 16 years of her life she has had her grandmother to teach her the ends and outs of living in the segregated south. All are free but not all are equal. This is one of many lessons Gussie is to learn in her young life. In this read, we follow her through life from the death of her grandmother, to true freedom, to love, to family, to the end.
This is a beautiful read that will have you reaching for varying emotions. Have a box of tissue, a comfortable place to read, and sit back and enjoy the journey of Gussie Gibson.
